Strangely, even after 70 years of independence, the Indian population is struggling through several health challenges like cancer. Over six lakhs succumb to cancer every year “As reported by World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 million new cases are reported in India while about 6.8 lakh people die due to cancer in India,”. This frightening reality of human life ruins the entire family and especially those of socio-economically disadvantaged people who can’t effort their basic necessities. Today this is the picture even in Assam where over 90,000 cancer patients were detected in the last five years and the situation worsening especially in the village area.
Hazari gaon is a village with around 500 population, 5 miles from Jorhat district. People struggle with numerous social-economic factors for a quality lifelike hunger, poverty, proper education, health, hygiene, sanitation, infrastructure, employment, etc.
When people around are digitalizing in all aspects, these people don’t have the right to live. Once, Sourav Dutta, 26 shows an old man sitting on the roadside, shivering and coughing. In a glance, Sourav went nearer the man and asked what was happening to him.
The man full of tears and failure said to him, dear son I am going through the third stage of cancer and we the poor people have no hope for life and no help from any source. I got stuck for a moment and decided to take the person to the hospital and be his support till the last breath.
That day was a turning point in my life and decided to help the people who are suffering. Before, this incident he uses to save his pocket money for the orphan children and every month visit an orphanage with whatever he can effort like food, books, pencils, clothes, dolls. “I found that this nongovernment even if it guarantees all-round development including education, nutrition, health, psychological development, and proper care but their lifestyle turns miserable craving for every little thing and happiness.
So I do a little effort to change their sorrow into a smile” He said. The health centre in Hazari gaon village which falls under the Jorhat district of Assam is spacious, neat, and well-equipped with a separate labour room but it has lack doctors and is very costly which becomes difficult for them to manage. “For most people living in rural areas, a smoothly functioning health centre is nothing less than a dream come true.
And the same exists in Hazari village where people are deprived of basic needs and basic health facilities” Sourav says. Keeping in consideration the condition he took a step which changes a few life’s around the village. He started an awareness program related to health, hygiene, sanitation, government concession, and schemes moving around the village and letting people know the outcomes, precautions, treatment, and symptoms of a disease like cancer. This awareness program was for 15 days which was part of his determination to help people suffering
. “The recent incident was a man from the village who was challenged by Gallbladder cancer, his struggle made his wife work as a servant in people’s residence but it was not enough for his treatment and the condition was worsening every second.
One day I came to know about the man and felt sorry for the suffering, immediately I started collecting money all that I had and took credit from few of my family friends for the operation. It gave me happiness and a smile on my face that I was successful in saving one life at the end of the day” He says Today, Hazari village has gained a quality of life, and people are aware to some extent of the outcomes. All this is possible only when people come toward fighting socio-economic challenges like illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, health, and hygiene life. Self-motivation and proper education is the key to fighting against social evil.
“The government has introduced several schemes for health, sanitation, infrastructure, education, agriculture, etc. which need to be properly utilized by the villager but yet I have to explore certain area making people aware because I believe somewhere or the other the problem lie within the scheme and people themselves which mainly concentrate on digitalization which hardly benefits the grass root people. Grassroots Sourav Dutta, won’t change the suffering of the poor into a smile. November 2016.
